History
The history of horse racing in Ontario dates back to the 19th century when horse racing was introduced by European settlers. Over time, various tracks and facilities emerged across the province, including Kawartha Downs which first opened its gates in 1956. Initially known as Oshawa’s own racetrack, it was later renamed Oshawa Downs before finally becoming known as Kawartha Downs in 1981.
The Facility
Located approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Toronto, near the town of Cannington, Ontario, Kawartha Downs boasts a lush natural landscape. Covering an area of roughly 90 acres (0.36 square kilometers), the facility offers ample parking and amenities for spectators to enjoy during events. The layout includes separate areas dedicated to horse racing, stables, administrative buildings, spectator seating areas, picnic grounds, and shops.
Types of Racing
Kawartha Downs features both live thoroughbred and harness racing events throughout its seasons, typically running from spring through autumn. Thoroughbred racing is characterized by short distances (typically a mile) over relatively flat terrain whereas the longer-distance endurance aspects of harness racing require specialized equipment to support riders in their mounts.
The Ontario Horse Racing Industry has developed several competition types at Kawartha Downs:
-
Stakes races : Higher-level contests offering substantial cash purses.
-
Claiming races : Horses are bought or claimed by new owners from existing ones for the starting price, sometimes adding an interest bonus to attract potential buyers.
-
Allowance races
- Allowance: Less stringent entry standards that still reward competitive effort
- Claimer allowance events restrict horse acquisition in competition’s context.
Harness Racing
Unique aspects of harness racing include drivers sitting in specialized carts attached behind the horses rather than traditional jockeys on top, with equipment designed for increased speeds and comfort. The training environment is tailored to accommodate both sprinting ( shorter distances) as well as endurance competitions where horses cover long periods without dismounting.
Live Events & Programming
Throughout its operation from early spring till late autumn each year, the facility stages an array of programs which typically include:
- Live thoroughbred racing
- Harness horse competitions
- Thoroughbred stakes races
To improve appeal and accessibility for spectators, Kawartha Downs implements special themed events like ‘Trot Night’, focusing on harness racers & incorporating family entertainment as well. A more formalized atmosphere accompanies its stakes races.

Kawartha Downs offers picnic facilities to guests with a range of available spaces including tables and grassy areas for casual events, in addition to the seating within grandstands offering unobstructed views of live competitions.
